12 reasons why mirrors are creepy

Mirrors have always been a source of intrigue for humans and there’s something extremely unique about mirrors that it has figured so prominently in children’s books (Snow White, Alice in Wonderland) and horror movies. Mirrors are an integral part of our daily lives and we are so addicted to our own images that we just can’t go anywhere without casting a glance at a mirror. The mirror, however, is believed to be a portal to the afterlife and there are many cultures which have supernatural beliefs regarding mirrors. Here, we have some of the strangest beliefs which show that mirrors can really be creepy.

In earlier times, and in some places still, mirrors were believed to have negative energies and the capability of sucking out souls. Mirrors were, therefore, removed from the room or the house where a dying person was as they believed it would suck out the person’s soul and the weak person would not be able to fight it.

Some cultures truly believe that looking into a mirror by candlelight, in the night, could be extremely dangerous for your soul. It is believed that at this time, demons, spirits and other ominous entities reside in the mirror and could reach out for your soul.

Some cultures have this belief that when a person dies, the mirrors either need to be covered or turned away to face the wall or the floor. It is believed that not doing so may result in the dead person’s soul being trapped in the mirror for eternity without escape.

Even the placement of the beds in the bedroom was done in a way that it does not reflect in the mirror. It was believed that when you are asleep, you are vulnerable and at your weakest. The demons, evil spirits etc. residing within the mirror were believed to watch out for such opportunities to suck a soul away.

In some cultures, people kept changing the position of the mirror in their houses from time to time. They would just move it from one corner of the room to another every few days. It was done in order to confuse the spirits who may use the mirror as a portal and try to seep into the human world. Changing positions was meant to stop this by creating confusion.

Heavy mirrors which could not be moved easily and remained in the same place for generations were also believed to be strongly attached to haunting activities in old houses. It is believed that these mirrors do capture dying souls, which in turn come out to haunt the house.

There have been numerous cases wherein people from across the world have reported unusual and supernatural activities in their house after they purchased antique mirrors or bought mirrors which had been in houses which witnessed a lot of deaths.

A lot of reports have emerged from hotels, old houses, and castles wherein the paranormal investigators have been told that the mirrors made the occupants extremely uncomfortable in a way they could not explain. While trick mirrors do create illusions but the eerie feeling reported by many people does seem beyond the normal.

Faces, unknown and unseen before, are the most common unnatural experience that people have with mirrors. They often report seeing faces or heads of people, for a second, they do not know and who are definitely not in the room. The sudden appearance and disappearance of unknown faces in the mirrors have been documented worldwide.

People also report mist like appearances in the mirrors which is definitely not present in the room. Mirrors, especially in haunted places, have been reported to reflect cloudy mists which disappear quickly but leaves the person who experienced it with a sense of haunting.

A lot of people from around the world have reported, along with paranormal investigators, that they have seen ‘shadow people’ in the mirrors. These shadow people are generally apparitions which they see for a second and which disappears by the time they can do something about it.

Mirrors, as one knows, reflects things in reverse. It is, therefore, a strongly held belief that if we live in the physical world, the world inside the mirror must be the reverse of it and hence it could easily be the world beyond the realms of life. Mirrors may, hence, house a universe for the dead and we may never be sure of it.
