Tesla Discontinues Cybertruck Range Extender Worth $16,000

Tesla has quietly removed the $16,000 range extender option from the Cybertruck configurator, signaling the discontinuation of the add-on battery pack that was intended to boost the electric pickup’s range. The range extender, which occupied roughly one-third of the truck’s bed, was listed as a “Range Extender” option since the Cybertruck’s launch, but it now appears as “no longer available” for new orders.

The range extender was designed to increase the Cybertruck’s total range from 340 miles to over 470 miles on a single charge. While the idea of extended range appealed to long-distance drivers and truck users, the $16,000 price tag and the significant loss of bed space made it a niche option. Many potential buyers opted for the standard battery or the more affordable range of the dual‑motor and tri‑motor configurations.

Tesla has not made an official announcement regarding the discontinuation. However, customers who had the range extender included in their existing orders have been notified that the option will be removed, and they may be offered a refund or alternative compensation. The removal suggests that demand did not meet expectations, and the production complexity may have outweighed the benefits.

The Cybertruck itself continues to evolve, with Tesla rolling out software updates and new features. For now, the Cybertruck’s range remains competitive, especially with access to Tesla’s Supercharger network. But the loss of the extended‑range option means buyers looking for maximum range will have to rely on the base range or future battery improvements.
