- Robots could outnumber humans by 2050. Some experts predict that the global robot population could reach 20 billion by 2050, surpassing the human population. Whether they’ll be our helpers or our overlords remains to be seen.
- The first chatbot was called ELIZA. Created in 1966 at MIT, ELIZA simulated a psychotherapist and could hold simple conversations. It’s considered the grandparent of today’s AI assistants like Siri and Alexa.
- Robot swarms can mimic bees. Researchers have developed swarms of tiny robots that communicate and coordinate just like a hive of bees. These swarms could one day be used for search-and-rescue missions or environmental monitoring.
- AI can now create art that sells for thousands. In 2018, a portrait generated by an AI algorithm sold for $432,500 at Christie‘s auction house. The piece, titled “Edmond de Belamy,” proves that machines can be creative too.
- Social media bots account for nearly half of all internet traffic. Studies estimate that bots generate 40–50% of all online traffic. While some are helpful (search engine crawlers), others are used for spam and misinformation.
- The word “robot” comes from Czech for “forced labor.” Playwright Karel Čapek introduced the term in his 1920 play “R.U.R.,” where artificial workers rebel against their human masters. The name stuck.
