Even seasoned speakers fall into these traps. Here are the most frequent mistakes we see — and smart ways to avoid them:
- Too many bullets. Your audience came to hear you, not to read your slides. Keep text to a minimum and use strong visuals to tell the story.
- Reading from slides. Nothing kills engagement faster. Slides are your cue cards, not your script. Make eye contact and speak naturally.
- Ignoring design consistency. A cluttered slide is a confused audience. Stick to a cohesive color scheme, limit fonts to two, and use plenty of white space.
- Forgetting the hook. The first 10 seconds decide whether people tune in or zone out. Start with a surprising fact, a provocative question, or a short personal story.
- Skipping rehearsal. Even the most confident presenters practice. Run through your timing, transitions, and — importantly — what to do if the tech fails.
