Here’s What It’s Really Like to Get Your Lips Tattooed

For many women, doing your makeup is a daily part of a routine that takes up at least half an hour of your time. If you’re going somewhere extra special, you might spend upwards of an hour or two on your makeup. Because doing your makeup takes so much time, many women have opted to go down the permanent makeup route. This essentially involves getting “makeup” tattooed onto your face. While the idea of a face tattoo might sound terrifying, permanent makeup is only meant to replace the products you already use. Here, one woman spoke to Refinery 29 about what it was like to get her lips tattooed to give them that “fresh coat of lipstick” look.

Permanent makeup. Thanks to the invention of permanent makeup, women can now get their eyebrows, lips, and even eyes tattooed instead of having to apply makeup on a regular basis. Here, Alyssa Cranmer spoke to Refinery 29 about what she went ahead and got her lips tattooed.

Procedure. While the procedure isn’t exactly cheap (depending on what you get), it can save you not only time, but money in the long run. Cranmer explained how one of the biggest reasons for her getting her lips tattooed is because it would save time.

Effortless. “I love the idea of waking up effortlessly beautiful and simplifying my morning makeup routine. My natural lip color is very pale — without lipstick on, I look like I don’t have lips. So there’s nothing like waking up or stepping out of the shower with full, pink lips already there,” said Cranmer, as reported by Refinery 29.

Preparation. Cranmer went to Elite Permanent Makeup & Training Center in Los Angeles to have the procedure done. She explained that the night before getting the procedure, she prepared by making sure her lips were exfoliated.

Exfoliation. “The night before the procedure, I did a lip scrub — I used sugar and Vaseline — and exfoliated my lips with a toothbrush. The day of, I also kept them hydrated with Vaseline, since softer, smoother skin retains pigment better than dry, flakey skin,” said Cranmer, as reported by Refinery 29.

Pain. As far as the procedure goes, Cranmer says it wasn’t extremely unbearable. One would think that having tiny needles on your lips would be painful, but Cranmer says for the most part she didn’t experience any discomfort.

like the upper parts of the lip. It did vary, though — sometimes I felt nothing and other times I felt a poking sensation,” Cranmer tells Refinery 29.

Duration. The biggest issue for many people is the duration of the makeup. Depending on where you get it, the make up could fade in just a few weeks, meaning you would have to get it touched up every few weeks.

Natural. “For the first week after the treatment, the color was quite dark. But now that the skin has healed and the color has faded, people are very surprised to hear that I’ve had my lips tattooed because it looks so natural — they just assume I’m wearing a nice lipstick,” said Cranmer, as reported by Refinery 29.

Healing. Cranmer says she plans on going back to the center to get her lips touched up after they’ve healed in about a month or so. After that, the color should last anywhere from one to two years.

Research. Before you decided to take the plunge and get your lips tattooed, you should make sure you do the proper research before going into a clinic. For one, you should know that getting your lips tattooed is not the same as getting injections.

Process. “It will just give you the appearance of a full lip. Since part of the process is outlining right on the border of the lip, I’m only helping to give your lips the appearance that their fuller,” said expert Amy Kernahan, as reported by Allure.

Shading. “I do an outline on the border of the lip, but I’m also shading the color down into the middle of the lip in a circular motion to give it more of a blended look,” said Kernahan, as reported by Allure.
