On paper Tinder is a great social media outlet to make new friends and come across strangers you want to get more comfortable with. From out of town hookups to a one night stand to simply going out and having a coffee together. However, it is up to you how you could use the app for some other purposes besides dating obviously. It takes some originality and the fact that guys sometimes can get really thirsty on these dating apps.
One person really saw the potential of this online dating playground to be a platform for much more than just forming new relationships. Maggie Archer, a student from Missouri Western State University found a way to make some easy bucks while using the app. She just offered her potential match with a very vague but at the same time enticing message of give her 5$ and “see what happens”.

The cleverly put sentence does not promise anything specific and given the nature of the dating platform men who are really looking for some action might start to have certain ideas. Add to it the relatively smaller amount of 5$ also creates an illusion of not spending too much so it might be worth the risk. Several guys quickly deposited 5$ to Maggie’s account through paypal just to tame their curiosity.

So once the money changes hands what actually happens is that Maggie unmatches the poor soul and blocks them out. Once hitting them up with the reality of the other side she moves on to the next guy who has 5$ to spare freely in order to feed their curiosity.

In her interview to BuzzFeed she claimed to have made around a 100$ in just one week as she saw around twenty or so guys who coughed up 5 bucks. They just could not suppress their urge to see some action and purely running on their hardcore thirst fell for the enticing message

There is a mixed reaction of people where some are absolutely thrilled at the idea and others who are not that welcoming of this exploitation of other’s temptations. Technically she is not at all scamming people as she is very vague in her claims for the 5$ exchange. There is nothing specific that she might have mentioned, it was just a general statement.

Some people are laughing on the entire thing and believe that those men who fell for this statement deserved to be robbed of their 5$. Some others were just too impressed of this simple yet effective way of making quick bucks that they jokingly offered her 5$ just for the mere fact of coming up with this idea.
Some people, mostly men were not sharing the same enthusiasm and thought about the whole thing as a scam and exploitation of an individual’s desires. Some of these were reasonable in their arguments but others were downright rude and in certain case a little offensive. Maybe they were one of the victims and feeling too sore after parting with their 5$.
Many people inspired to follow Maggie’s way of doing this and also added these enticing one liner statements in their profile promising something in exchange for some money. However the trend was already so viral and common on social media, discussed and talked upon that Tinder administration caught up with the act.
Since asking for money over Tinder is against their terms and policy Maggie’s account got deleted and anyone else asking for money also found their accounts being deleted.
Some people however got a little lucky before the Tinder could prevent any further cases of such nature. One particular individual, Caroline Phinney made 55$ in just two days before Tinder deleted her account.
Since it is a violation of Tinder’s Terms of Services it is better not to opt for it yourself or you might have to say goodbye to your account forever.
