10 Things You Should Never Do At The Gym (Note The Don'ts)

Welcome to the second page of our guide to gym etiquette. If you missed the first part, you can catch up on the initial five don'ts here. Below, we wrap up the list with five more crucial mistakes to avoid for a safe, respectful, and effective workout routine.

6. Don't Hoard Equipment

During peak hours, the gym can get extremely crowded. Sitting on a machine for minutes while scrolling through your phone is one of the most inconsiderate things you can do. A good rule of thumb is to let others work in if you are resting between sets. Keep your circuit moving to free up equipment for everyone trying to get their pump on.

7. Don't Ignore Gym Attire

Wearing the wrong clothes isn't just a fashion faux pas; it can be a genuine safety hazard. Loose clothing can easily get caught in cables and machines. Always wear clean, breathable fabrics and proper closed-toe athletic shoes to protect your feet and maintain basic hygiene in shared spaces.

8. Don't Skip Wiping Down Machines

Sweat happens! It is a natural part of working out. However, leaving a puddle of sweat on a bench or cardio machine is unsanitary for the next person. Always carry a towel, or use the spray and paper towels provided. Wipe down equipment before and after you use it as a basic courtesy.

9. Don't Use Your Phone in High-Traffic Areas

We get it, you want to track your sets or change the music. But standing in the middle of the walkway, squat rack zone, or dumbbell area to text or take a call is a surefire way to cause a collision. Step into a corner or the stretching area when you need to send a message or take a call.

10. Don't Overestimate Your Limits Without a Spotter

It is great to be ambitious, but ego lifting is a common cause of injuries in the gym. Know your limits. If you are attempting a new personal record or a heavy set, always ask a staff member or a fellow gym-goer for a spot. Leaving your pride at the door ensures you can come back tomorrow and lift another day.

By keeping these final five tips in mind, you can ensure your gym time is productive and pleasant for everyone involved. Remember, a little courtesy goes a very long way in maintaining a positive workout environment for the whole gym community.
